The first-year students and those in the advanced module of the Ambassador of Mechelen program started the new year on a high note. In their cozy AmbassadorsCafé at the Sint-Pietersschool in the historic Nekkerspoel district, they enjoyed inspiring stories. Pieter Deleu spoke about how to make a city greener, while Joachim Piens emphasized the importance of heritage for Mechelen.
Pieter Deleu showcased his project “Greening Your Playground”, demonstrating how concrete can make way for greenery. The renovated playground at the Sint-Pietersschool is now full of natural elements and biodiversity. Children can play, learn about nature, and enjoy a greener environment. This project shows how urban greenery can enhance neighborhoods and make them more pleasant and livable. It perfectly aligns with the greening of the district, including Kalverenpark. This park has been transformed into a green city garden with plants, playful tree trunks, and a sandbox enjoyed by the whole community.

Joachim Piens brought Mechelen’s history to life with his presentation on the Memorandum for Immovable Heritage in Mechelen. He demonstrated that historic buildings and sites not only reflect the past but also play a role in shaping the city’s future. Preserving or repurposing heritage makes Mechelen even more attractive for both residents and visitors.
