"After a long career where I could make good use of my diploma as a translator-interpreter, I was looking for a meaningful way to spend my time, so I enrolled in Spanish lessons and 'The Story of Mechelen' at Crescendo CVO. During a city walk, I saw a call for volunteers to support non-native speakers, and that was the start of my work as a volunteer. I help with Nederlands Vandaag: practicing Dutch in and outside the classroom is central here."
"I am not only present in the lessons, but I also take the time to prepare. Today, for example, I played a card game with the group for the first time. We do not use a textbook: the focus is on conversation. We also often go out into the city to connect students with spoken language. For example, we visit the Basilica of Our Lady of Hanswijk or the Hof van Busleyden. These visits are prepared as a group, and sometimes a guest speaker comes to provide more background information."
"For me, language is the key to integration and successful participation in society. That is why I find it important to help newcomers learn Dutch. My background as a translator-interpreter helps me convey the language correctly and encourage students to speak Dutch. Volunteering is truly enriching for me. Collaboration with the teachers is very spontaneous and pleasant, and interacting with students from very diverse backgrounds constantly provides new insights."
"A heartwarming moment was the Christmas party with the students at Crescendo CVO. The openness of the students was truly special and made me feel like I belonged. It is a confirmation that even when a professional chapter comes to an end, there is still so much you can do for others. That gives me a lot of energy and a sense of appreciation."
